Holi a Unique fetival of colours

The word Holi is rightly derived from the word Hola means Anna (raw food ). In Vedic Period , married females used to serve half cooked food to ire and do worship of full moon to mark beginning of new year .

Beginning of Basant month marks the arrival of Holi and Chaitra month begin immediately after this festival. .This month is also termed as Phalgun. Holi festival begins well before Basant Panchmi on the day the Gulal (dry color made naturally) is spread all over the dear ones especially by farmers and their families for better crop yield.

As per Hindu calendar Holi is being celebrated in the Phagun month on full Moon day .Traditionally it is celebrated for two days .First day is Holika Dahan and second day is main day called –Dhuraddi/ Dhuledi/ Dhurkhel/ Dhulivandan.

It is also named as Basantotsava or Kama Mahotsava. Kama clearly indicates to rejuvenate the feeling of youthfulness and its celebration through teasing, showing love and throwing invitation to other sex though action via colors and music. It is also called Manvaditithi to mark the birth of First Man "Manu”.

Music and Holi Colors are an essential element of Holi Festival .On this festival People play with water , colors in form of Abir and Gulal (Herbal) .They assemble in group ,play drums and sing songs . They go to every house to play colors with Holi Pitchkari and water Guns with all possible members of the house and eat special Holi Sweets like Holi Gujia ,Samosa etc..They also exchange Holi Gifts with each other.

Various reference are available to indicate that Holi is one of the oldest festival of India .Various poets had artistically described and depicted well how Lord Krishna played Ras Lila throuh Holi with Radha , Gop and Gopies (male and female friends) .

Many religious books like Narad Purana, Bhavishya Purana, Meemensha Sutra and Katha Sutra amply described this youthful festival.

Famous Muslim Tourist Alburni had praised the enthusiasm associated with this festival well in his travel briefings.

History is a proof that not only Hindu but also Muslims had been celebrating this festival in India from Mogul Period .Various instances are available , in which Akbar with Jodhabai and Jenahgir with Noorjahan , have played Holi together .In Alwar Museum wall pictures are available in which King Jehangir is playing Holi with Noor Jahan as an evidence.

In the period of Jehangir the Holi was played in Royal fashion .This festival was termed as Eid a Gulabi or Aab a Pashi.

It is famous that all court men in the period of last Mogul emperor Bahadur Shah Jafar used to visit him and play color on this auspicious day.

Various instances of Holi celebrations are available through sculptures and remains available in various states of India like Humpi in 16th century (Vijay Nagar), Mewar (Rajasthan) etc.
